Patricia Milford

Some heroes wear capes, while others wear scrubs. Patricia Milford is a dedicated, now retired nurse for over 40 years. Pat spent her career caring for patients, never expecting that one day, she would save a life in a way she never imagined. Yet, deep in her heart, she had always felt a calling to give back by donating one of her kidneys.
Our paths crossed at her hospital where I went for monthly lab work. Pat wasn’t my nurse, but fate had other plans. One day, my phlebotomist ran into Pat after my appointment, and their conversation would change my life forever.
Pat shared a story about a little boy she had seen on the news, pleading for a kidney donor for his father. That moment ignited something deep inside her. Years ago, she had wanted to donate a kidney to a patient, but circumstances prevented it. Seeing that child’s plea felt like a sign—an opportunity to fulfill a dream she had long carried in her heart. Inspired, Pat decided to begin testing to become a donor for the boy’s father. However, due to an overwhelming response, three other matches were found, meaning Pat was no longer needed.
As she recounted this to my phlebotomist, fate intervened once more. My phlebotomist mentioned she had a patient—me—who was on dialysis and in need of a kidney transplant. She then asked Pat if she would consider donating to me—a total stranger. Without hesitation, Pat simply said, “Absolutely! I have two. I only need one.”
I was stunned when I received the call. I couldn’t believe that someone I had never met would step forward and willingly choose to save a life. Over the next several months, Pat and I embarked on this journey together. She wanted to meet me, to walk through this process side by side. And then, the miracle happened: we were a match.
On June 25, 2019, at 67 years old, Pat gave me more than just a kidney—she gave me a future. I had been on dialysis for three and a half years, waiting for a second chance, and Pat made it possible. Words will never fully capture my gratitude for her selflessness, kindness, and unwavering generosity.
In July 2024, Pat and I experienced the Transplant Games of America together in Birmingham, Alabama—a celebration of life, resilience, and the power of organ donation. And in June 2025, we will celebrate our six-year kidneyversary—six years of renewed health, hope, and a bond that goes beyond words.
Pat and I are in each other’s daily lives, sharing our story with anyone who will listen. It’s the power of storytelling—proof that one conversation can change a person’s life.
For these reasons and more, I am honored to nominate Patricia Milford for the Organ Donor Hall of Fame. Her story is proof that acts of kindness, no matter how unexpected, can change lives forever.
To anyone reading this: Share your story. Someone is always listening. JS
I love you, Pat. I didn’t just gain a new kidney(PJ)—I gained a sister forever.
