Michael-Gene Robert Futch was a fun loving, family centered, 19-year-old with a passion for taekwondo and basketball. Michael’s other passion was helping others. He was kind and compassionate, even towards strangers. It wasn’t until the night of November 20, 2010, that our family had to make the decision for Michael to help others, as we know he would’ve wanted to. Michael had been in a tragic car accident that ultimately left him brain dead. As a family, we made the unanimous decision to allow Michael to become an organ donor to save the lives of others. Michael would go on to save six people’s lives that day, gift sight to two, and aid in the health and recovery of countless others through tissue donation. He was a remarkable young man, and he is loved and missed every day by his family. Michael’s birthday was Christmas Eve and his family created the Michael-Gene Kids Basketball Foundation in his honor. In August 2023, the basketball courts where Michael played every day were renamed after him; Michael-Gene Kids Basketball Courts, located at 895 Carlyle Ave., Palm Bay, Florida. His family continues to spread the word about organ donation in his loving memory and honor. Michael’s legacy was helping others and that is what his family continues to do in his loving memory.
